Revitalizing Hakka Heritage: The Yong An Harbor Rebranding

Shih Pei, Huang and Chia Lin, Wang's Innovative Approach to Cultural Preservation

Discover how Shih Pei, Huang and Chia Lin, Wang's design project, Hak Hi Kong, breathes new life into Taiwan's only Hakka fishing port, Yong An, through a unique rebranding initiative.

Located in Taiwan, an island country known for its numerous ports, Yong An Fishing Port holds a unique distinction. It is the only port belonging to the Hakka people, specifically the Hui Shi Hakka who live by the sea. Despite its cultural significance, the port was indistinguishable from others in Taiwan. This lack of unique identity served as the inspiration for Shih Pei, Huang and Chia Lin, Wang's project, Hak Hi Kong.

The designers embarked on a mission to create a visual style and concept that truly represented the Hakka, enhancing the port's cultural visual identity. Their proposal involved three key concepts to rebuild Yong An Fishing Port's CI system. The first was the creation of a new logo, derived from the cultural characteristics of the Hakka community. The second involved reimagining the entertainment experience, leading to the creation of two mascot characters. These mascots were designed to guide tourists into the port and represent the Hakka community. The final concept involved planning nine spots within the port, each offering entertainment activities and delicious cuisines.

Shih Pei, Huang and Chia Lin, Wang's design project goes beyond mere aesthetics. It is a testament to the power of design in cultural preservation and community engagement. The project, aptly named Hak Hi Kong, aims to make every guest who visits the Yong An Fishing Port feel like a part of the Hakka community. The term 'Hak Hi Kong' signifies the blending of guest and Hakka, two terms that carry different meanings in Traditional Chinese Characters.

Technical considerations were also crucial in the realization of this project. The designers chose four distinct colors from the existing buildings in the Yong An Fishing Port to form the new identity color scheme. This decision ensured coherence with the original colors and unified the overall visual sight of the port.

The Hak Hi Kong project has not gone unnoticed in the design world. It was awarded Silver in the A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award in 2020. This prestigious accolade is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, strong technical characteristics, and remarkable artistic skill. It is a testament to Shih Pei, Huang and Chia Lin, Wang's commitment to preserving and promoting Hakka culture through innovative design.
